Ukraine Land Delivers the Goods
According to definitive harvest figures from Ukraine's Ministry of Agrarian Policy, yields from Ukraine land were 48.24 million tonnes this year, the second highest harvest ever. Quality of grain has improved and exports are booming, proving that investment in Ukraine land has a very bright future.
This year's yields from Ukraine land were always expected to be good, but the final figure of over 48 million tonnes is higher than originally forecast by the authorities. Favourable weather conditions, better farming techniques and greater land productivity have all played their part in producing a bumper harvest.
This year's harvest is the second best for Ukraine after last year's record 53.3 million tonnes. The grain brought in from Ukraine land this year, however, is higher quality, evidence that the policy of introducing modern technology into farming is paying off.
Farming experts believe that both yields and quality will continue to climb as Ukraine agricultural gradually reaches its full potential. Independent studies have shown that Ukraine land is currently producing considerably less than it can. World Bank figures estimate that Ukraine yields have the potential to more than double once farming techniques reach optimum level.
Exporting grain from Ukraine agricultural land is big business and this marketing year (MY) has got off to an excellent start. Since the start of this MY in July, Ukraine has exported 11.3 million tonnes of grain. This figure is a 7% increase on the same period during the last MY. Exports are expecting to continue to grow because of better storage facilities and port infrastructure.
Crimea, one of the main areas in Ukraine for agricultural land, has also had a good harvest. Almost 612,000 tonnes of grain harvested from Crimea land was sold between January and October this year, a 3.5% increase on last year's sales. The grain sales were mostly made up of 374,700 tonnes of wheat and 203,800 tonnes of barley. Ukraine land is one of the world's top producers of sunflower seeds and Crimea sold 13,500 tonnes in the first ten months of this year.
During a harvest year when some grain-producing countries have seen lower yields - the US harvest in several key areas has been severed curtailed by bad weather and Argentina's has been hampered by drought - Ukraine's second best harvest is excellent news. Not only for an increasingly hungry world but also for those who have included Ukraine land investment in their portfolio. As better farming techniques are introduced and used more widely, returns from Ukraine agricultural land will undoubtedly continue to reach record levels. When it comes to bumper yields, Ukraine land certainly delivers the goods.
